Ken Saro-Wiwa was a Nigerian writer, environmental activist, and political figure. He is renowned for his leadership in the Ogoni uprising against Shell's oil operations in the Niger Delta. Saro-Wiwa was executed in 1995, along with eight other Ogoni leaders, an event that garnered international condemnation and heightened awareness of the environmental and human rights issues in the region.
