“सत्याग्रह एकीकडे राजकीय लढ्यात लक्षावधींना सहभागी होण्याची संधी उपलब्ध करून देत होता. तशी संधी सशस्त्र चळवळ उपलब्ध करून देऊ शकत नव्हती. दुसरीकडे सत्याग्रह जनतेचा आत्मविश्वास जागा करीत होता. द्वेषाने पेटलेल्या मनाने अंधारात पोलीसठाणे जाळले तरी जाहीररीत्या सरकारची प्रतिष्ठा तशीच शिल्लक राहते. कारण पोलीसचौकी जाळणारे लोक उघड्यावर येऊन आपला हक्क व समर्थन घोषित करू शकत नाहीत. गांधीजींनी जनतेला जाहीररीत्या इंग्रजांचे कायदे मोडण्याची शिकवण दिली. मोकळेपणाने एकेक कार्यकर्ता कोर्टात सांगत असे की, हा कायदा मी तोडलेला आहे, पुन्हा संधी मिळाली तर तो मी तोडीन. मात्र सत्याग्रहाची चळवळ ही जितकी कायदा तोडण्याची चळवळ होती, तितकीच कायदा पाळण्याची चळवळ होती. सत्याग्रही तुरुंगाचे कायदे पाळीत. जेलमधून पळून जात नसत. ते पोलिसांशी झटापट करीत नसत. लाठीमारासमोर शांतपणे उभे राहत असत. मालमत्तेचा विध्वंस न करता ते कायदेही तोडू शकत असत, यातनाही भोगू शकत असत. अन्याय्य कायदा जाहीररीत्या निर्भयपणे तोडावा, कायदा तोडल्याबद्दलचे शासन शांतपणे बिनतक्रार सहन करावे, ही शिस्त गांधीजींनी लोकांना लावली. यामुळे निर्भयपणे इंग्रजांना 'देशातून चालते व्हा' म्हणून सांगण्याची मानसिक हिंमत जनतेत आली. लढ्यातून हुल्लडशाही, झुंडशाही, विध्वंस यांची लाट निर्माण झाली नाही. स्वातंत्र्यलढ्याची प्रक्रिया या मार्गाने गेली, म्हणून स्वातंत्र्योत्तर काळात लोकशाहीचा प्रयोग शक्य झाला.”
