A Stir of Echoes

A Stir of Echoes is a supernatural thriller novel by American writer Richard Matheson, first published in 1958. The story follows Tom Wallace, a seemingly average man living in suburban Los Angeles, whose life changes dramatically after his brother-in-law subjects him to hypnosis at a party. Following the session, Tom begins experiencing a range of psychic phenomena, including telepathy and clairvoyance. These new abilities initially seem like remarkable gifts, but they soon become a source of terror as he starts receiving visions of a young woman who appears to have been murdered. The novel explores themes of perception, the hidden darkness beneath ordinary suburban life, and the psychological toll of unwanted knowledge. Matheson, who was known for his contributions to horror, science fiction, and fantasy, wrote the novel during a prolific period that also produced works such as I Am Legend and The Shrinking Man. The book was adapted into a 1999 film directed by David Koepp and starring Kevin Bacon, which updated the setting to contemporary Chicago while maintaining the core premise of a man whose psychic awakening leads him into danger and mystery. The novel remains part of Matheson's recognized body of work that frequently examined ordinary people confronting extraordinary and unsettling circumstances. more
