But all this passed as the old man went on another tangent and started talking about poorly divided subdivisions out in a new housing development east of town, and all his murderous mystique fell to the wayside, and he regained his normal and deaf and offending demeanor, a counterfeit only playing at the sublime, a man less than the sum of his crimes.”
