Pope Gregory I (c. 540 – March 12, 604), also known as Gregory the Great, was the 64th Bishop of Rome (Pope) from 590 to 604. Born into a wealthy Roman patrician family, he served as Prefect of Rome before becoming a Benedictine monk.
