“मी काय करावं न कळून नुसता बसून राहिलो. आम्ही एकमेकांकडे मधून मधून बघत होतो आणि ती बहिणीशी बोलण्यात गुंग आहे असं दाखवत असली तरी तिचं लक्ष माझ्याकडे होतं हे मला माहित होतं. पण वेळ फुकट जात होता. एवढं सगळं जमवून आणून काही बोलणंच नाही म्हणजे काय? परत अशी संधी कधी येणार? मला आतल्या आत खूप अस्वस्थ व्हायला होत होतं. मग बराच वेळ असा गेल्यानंतर माझ्या लक्षात आलं की ते असं बसणंसुद्धा खूप छान होतं. त्या बाहेरच्या मंडपालाही स्वच्छ, गार काळी फरशी होती. फुलांचा आणि उदबत्त्यांचा सुंदर वास दरवळत होता. मधून मधून घंटा वाजत होत्या. सगळे लोक कसे स्वच्छ आंघोळी करून चांगले चांगले कपडे घालून आले होते. सगळं वातावरण कसं आनंदी आणि पवित्र होतं आणि मुख्य म्हणजे त्या मंडपात शिरोडकर होती. माझ्यापासून लांब बसलेली. पण तिच्या आणि माझ्यामध्ये काही तरी होतं. सोनेरी आकाशगंगेसारखं. आणि ते जे होतं त्यानं आम्हांला दोघांना बांधून घेतलं होतं. आणि ते इतर कुणालाच दिसत नव्हतं. तिच्या बहिणीला, आजूबाजूच्या माणसांना, कुणालाच नाही. फक्त आम्हांलाच दिसत होतं ते आणि तिथल्या त्या देवांना. ते आमच्याकडे पाहून गालातल्या गालात हसत असणार आणि न मागताही आशीर्वाद देत असणार. आणि ते काही तरी होतं हे मला उशिरानं कळलं, पण शिरोडकरला आधीच कळलं असणार. म्हणून ती शांतपणे बसली होती. नुसती मंद मंद हसत. मग मला कळलं की, आम्ही जे शोधतोय ते हे आहे. ते जे आमच्या दोघांमध्ये न बोलता भरून राहिलं होतं ते. आम्ही सगळेच शोधत होतो ते. मी, सुऱ्या, फावड्या, चित्र्या, आंबेकर, सुकडी, नरूमामा. आम्हांला सगळ्यांना पाहिजे होतं ते हेच. त्याला काय म्हणतात ते मला माहित नव्हतं. पण त्याची काही गरज नव्हती. ते मला सापडलं होतं आणि तिलाही. मग पूर्वी कधीही पहिला नव्हता असला आनंद माझ्या मनात भरून आला. मला खूप सुंदर वाटलं. पवित्र. भाग्यवान. म्हणून मग थोड्या वेळानं त्या दोघी उठल्या आणि फाटकाकडे चालू लागल्या तेव्हा मी शांतपणे त्यांना जाऊ दिलं. ती फाटकातून जाताना मागे वळून पाहील हे मला माहित होतं. तसं तिनं पाहिलंच. तिला लांबून दिसलं नसणार, पण मी समजूतदारपणे फक्त हसलो.”
