Por un lado, el hampa, putas y ladrones, que parecen esculpidos en la misma piedra color elefante de las fachadas, barnizados con el fulgor rojo y blanco de los letreros, envejecidos por las emanaciones de los tubos de escape. Este sector observa con burlona extrañeza al segundo grupo: personal muy comprometido en los asuntos de la hora, entonadores de pegadizos lemas, repartidores de volantes, mesas con manifiestos y banderas que recorren sueños triunfales hacia las elecciones de junio del 77, y más allá, la disolución y el olvido. Ahora, los políticos radicales advierten la provocación de los fascistas, quienes, en pequeño comité, se ajustan en el ceño las gafas de sol y en la muñeca los guantes de cuero, mientras negocian la violencia con un amigo policía. El tercer grupo ramblero, más colorista, lo forma una especie de lectura entre líneas de los grupos anteriores; y si no fuera porque a veces también reciben estopa, uno diría que han venido de su pueblo, no en busca de prosperidad, como era costumbre hasta ahora, sino a pasar el rato lo mejor posible. Vestidos de bailaoras o a punto de hacerlo, se identifican mediante la abstracción indumentaria con otros cuya dicción nasal, pañuelo carmesí y esmeralda melena trasmiten la difuminada intuición de que viven en otra ciudad y otro mundo del cual este que pisan es caricatura, y aquellas algaradas, las hostias, las carreras, sólo batidores que sujetan la fiesta novedosa, la perfecta juventud.”
