“তাই আমি ‘প্লী’টা বদল করতে চাই, য়োর অনার! ভোট দিয়ে যাঁদের দেশশাসক বানিয়েছি – তারা হয়ে উঠেছে দেশশোষক! পার্লামেন্টারি ডেমোক্রেসিতে এর একমাত্র প্রতিষেধক: স্ট্রং অপোজিশান: দুর্নীতিমুক্ত শক্তিশালী বিরোধীপক্ষ! এ-দেশে সেটা আকাশকুসুম! কী প্রাদেশিক সরকারে, কী কেন্দ্রে! সর্বত্রই শুধু পার্টিবাজি, গ্রুপবাজি, নির্লজ্জ খাওয়া-খাওয়ি। পার্টি নেতৃত্বে উপরে ওঠার জন্য সহযোদ্ধাকে লেঙ্গি মারা। এই যখন দেশের অবস্থা তখন কার দিকে ভরসা করে তাকাবে নিপীড়িত দেশের সাধারণ মানুষ? শেষ ভরসাস্থল ছিল: সংবাদপত্র; শেষ আশ্রয়স্থল ছিল সাহিত্যিকেরা। রামমোহন-বিদ্যাসাগর-বঙ্কিম-হরিশচন্দ্র-দীনবন্ধু-রবীন্দ্রনাথের উত্তরসূরীরা। কিন্তু ঐ মুষ্টিমেয় ক্ষমতাদর্পীর বিকৃতচিন্তায় আমরা সেখানেও আশাহত। ঐ হারিত-জারিত-লারিত গবেষণা করে জানাচ্ছেন: “রামমোহন রায় কিংবা দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের ডিনার টেবিলে সুরাপান”-এর আয়োজন হত এবং সেটাই তাঁদের বিষয়ে মুখ্য আলোচ্য-বিষয়! বঙ্কিম বাঙলা লিখতে ঠিক জানতেন না। আর হরিশচন্দ্র মুখার্জী ─ সেই আদর্শ সাংবাদিক, যিনি নীলবিদ্রোহের বার্তা তাঁর পত্রিকায় প্রকাশ করার প্রচেষ্টায় বস্তুত প্রাণ দিলেন ─ তাঁর সম্বন্ধে এঁদের বক্তব্য “দেশপ্রেমিক হরিশ মুখার্জীর পরদারগমনের উল্লেখই অনেকের কাছে ভয়াবহ বোধ হয়।”
