Avrei dovuto muovere dal fatto che la figura accattivante di un uomo quasi estraneo, un uomo del caso, un "forse" tutto da sbrogliare ma gratificante, era capace di dar senso, mettiamo, a un odore fugace di benzina, al tronco grigio di un platano di città, e fissare per sempre in quel luogo fortuito di incontro un sentimento intenso di letizia, un'attesa; mentre niente, niente di Mario possedeva più lo stesso movimento terremotizio, e ogni gesto aveva solo il potere di essere collocato sempre al posto giusto, nella stessa rete sicura, senza scarti, senza dismisure.
