“I had serious training of painting styles from different historical periods... But to have all this training is not enough to be an artist. You have to add a new page to history; otherwise you are not making a contribution. But making history is not easy.” DifferentEnoughArtistEasyHistoryStylePaintingSeriousPeriodsPagesTrainingAddHistoricalContributionMaking History Author:Liu Dan
“The idea was to take fine art and put it into the location of the movie scripts. The script itself is collage - some of the lines come from actual movies and I've written others to make the text work with the found image. In this way, the details of old dead guys' paintings (from the collection of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, where this work will be exhibited in relation to the historical paintings) become illustrations of the movie scripts. I found this mélange of high art and Hollywood amusing.” WayArtIdeasGuyFoundLinesWrittenPaintingFineHollywoodRelationHistoricalScriptsDetailsCollectionsMuseumsLocationAmusingFine ArtsIllustrationCollagesHigh ArtFrankfurt Author:John Baldessari
“My concern today is with the painting of manners of the present. The past is interesting not only by reason of the beauty which could be distilled from it by those artists for whom it was the present, but also precisely because it is the past, for its historical value. It is the same with the present. The pleasure which we derive from the representation of the present is due not only to the beauty with which it can be invested, but also to its essential quality of being present” ReasonTodayPastArtistValuesPleasureInterestingQualityPaintingEssentialsConcernHistoricalDuesMannersRepresentationHistorical Value Book:The Painters of Modern Life Source: The Painters of Modern Life
“That's partly the success of my work-the ability to have a young black girl walk into the Brooklyn Museum and see paintings she recognizes not because of their art or historical influence but because of their inflection, in terms of colors, their specificity and presence.” ArtYoungGirlBlackTermAbilityWalksInfluenceColorPaintingHistoricalMuseumsBrooklynBlack GirlSpecificity Author:Kehinde Wiley
“There were some types of sanctions that happen in the public world that made my work acceptable, where someone looks at the paintings and they don't - they may go, "okay," and then look at it in a different sort of way. Instead of just looking at it as some type of wild art, they look at it in a historical perspective or context.” WorldWayLooksMayArtMadeDifferentHappensPaintingPerspectiveTypeOkayHistoricalAcceptableSanctionsHistorical Perspective Author:Julian Schnabel
