George Smathers (November 14, 1913 - January 20, 2007) was an American Democratic politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Florida from 1951 to 1973. Born in Miami, Florida, he was educated at the University of Florida and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1950, Smathers achieved a major political upset by defeating the incumbent Senator Claude Pepper, catapulting himself into national prominence at age 36. Known for his fierce anticommunist stance during the Cold War and his support for civil rights legislation, Smathers became one of Florida's most influential political figures in the mid-20th century. His twenty-two years in the Senate were marked by bipartisan cooperation and strong advocacy for Florida's interests in federal policy-making.
