Guru Amar Das (1479-1574) was the third of the Ten Sikh Gurus, serving from 1552 until his death. Born in Basarke, Punjab, he became a devoted Sikh after hearing Guru Nanak's teachings and was chosen as the third Guru at age 73. During his 22-year tenure, he established the Manji system for missionary work, composed numerous hymns included in the Guru Granth Sahib, and founded the town of Goindwal as a Sikh center. He was a strong advocate for women's equality and organized Sikh congregations. Guru Amar Das passed away at age 95, leaving a lasting legacy in organizing and strengthening the Sikh community.
