Hafez al-Assad, the former President of Syria, was born on October 6, 1930, and died on June 10, 2000. He came to power in a coup in 1963 and served as Syria's leader until his death. During his presidency, al-Assad implemented a series of political and economic reforms, but also faced domestic and international political turmoil and conflicts.
