Kalakaua was the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, born on November 16, 1836, and died on January 20, 1891. During his reign, he promoted the modernization of Hawaii and worked to maintain the kingdom's independence. Kalakaua established diplomatic relations with Western countries and initiated a series of reforms.
