Kalpana Chawla, born on March 17, 1962, in Punjab, India, was an American astronaut of Indian descent. Tragically, she lost her life on February 1, 2003, during the STS-107 mission. She was the first Indian woman to enter space and the first Indian American astronaut in NASA's history.
