Katharine Lee Bates was an American songwriter and professor, renowned for her composition of the patriotic song 'America the Beautiful'. Born on August 12, 1859, in Falmouth, Maine, Bates spent her life in Maine, teaching at Wellesley College and Vassar College. She passed away on March 28, 1929.
