Rebecca Lee Crumpler was a prominent American physician and the first African American woman to earn a medical degree. Born on February 8, 1831, and passing away on March 9, 1895, Dr. Crumpler was renowned for her contributions to public health and nursing. She opened her own clinic in Boston and authored the first medical book written by an African American woman, 'Book of the Negro Woman: A Manual of Medical Discourse and Advice to Ladies on the Sanitary Management of Children from Birth to Twelve Years Old'.
