Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1976) was a pioneering Bengali-Indian filmmaker and one of the most important figures in Indian cinema's New Wave movement. Known for his profound political consciousness and deep empathy for the marginalized, Ghatak created films that dealt with the trauma of Partition, the suffering of peasants and workers, and questions of national identity. His poetic visual style, combining realism with symbolism, established him as a major auteur. Though not widely recognized during his lifetime, his artistic legacy has since been celebrated internationally as a cornerstone of world cinema.
