
Kurt Schmoke
Kurt Schmoke (born December 1, 1949) is an American lawyer, politician, and educator. He served as the first African American elected mayor of Baltimore (1987-1999) and later as president of the University of Baltimore (2003-2014). A Yale University and Harvard Law School graduate, Schmoke is known for his education reform initiatives, drug policy advocacy, and urban revitalization efforts. His career spans public service, academia, and legal practice, with a focus on community development and social justice.
