
Claude Bissell
Claude Bissell (February 10, 1916 – June 21, 2000) was a Canadian author, scholar, and educator, best known as the president of the University of Toronto from 1958 to 1971. He gained prominence for his biographies of Vincent Massey and Sir Ernest MacMillan, which are considered landmarks in Canadian literary biography. Born in Midland, Ontario, Bissell studied at the University of Toronto and Cornell University. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II before returning to academia. As president, he oversaw the university's expansion and modernization. He was a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. His works remain influential in Canadian literary criticism.
