Shmi Skywalker is a fictional character from the Star Wars franchise, the mother of Anakin Skywalker (who later becomes Darth Vader). Born into slavery on Tatooine, she raised Anakin alone until Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn freed him. Unable to purchase her own freedom, Shmi remained behind while Anakin left with the Jedi. She was later freed and married to Cliegg Lars, but was ultimately kidnapped by Tusken Raiders. Anakin rescued her, but she died in his arms, a tragic event that would deeply influence his path to the dark side.
