
Trofim Lysenko
Trofim Denisovich Lysenko was a Soviet agronomist and geneticist known for his theories on the inheritance of acquired characteristics and his role in the Soviet agricultural policies. Born on September 29, 1898, in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, Lysenko's theories were based on Lamarckian evolution and became highly influential in Soviet agricultural policies during the 1930s and 1940s. He was appointed Director of the Institute of Plant Industry in Moscow and gained significant political influence. Lysenko's theories were later discredited, leading to his downfall and imprisonment. His legacy remains controversial, with his role in the persecution of geneticists and other scientists in the Soviet Union being widely criticized.
