Richard Jenkins (born May 4, 1947) is an American film, television, and stage actor known for his versatile performances in independent and mainstream cinema. Born in Decatur, Illinois, he graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University and began his career in theater. Jenkins gained acclaim for his role as Nathaniel Fisher in the HBO series Six Feet Under (2001-2005) and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Giles in The Shape of Water (2017). With over 80 film credits, including O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Visitor (2007), and The Banker (2020), he is celebrated as a master of subtle, naturalistic acting. “I'm always trying to find that role that will allow me to stretch and play a lot of different sides, but it's hard. To be frank, as an actor, I read maybe a hundred scripts a year and I really strongly respond to probably two, but every other actor in town responds to those two scripts, as well. It's hard to land those roles that are really good because they're coveted. That's why I try to create for myself, and that's why I've been doing things outside of acting, like writing and producing.
