“उन दिनों मैं दिल्ली के आई. आई. टी. से इंजीनियरिंग कर रहा था. मेरी परीक्षाएं समाप्त हुईं और मैं भोपाल जाने की तैयारी करने लगा. मेरी उम्र 22 वर्ष थी तथा पिताजी और माँ के बीच मेरे विवाह के सम्बन्ध में लगातार चर्चा चल रही थी. जब उन्होंने विवाह के विषय में मेरा निर्णय जानना चाहा तब मैंने अपनी स्वीकृति दे दी. उन्होंने सबसे पहले श्री वर्माजी की लड़की के नाम का प्रस्ताव रखा. उसका नाम वर्षा था. वर्षा और मैं बचपन में साथ खेलते थे, साथ खाया-पिया करते थे. परन्तु पिछले एक-दो वर्षों से वर्षा मेरे सामने आने से बचने लगी थी. इस विषय में मैंने उससे पूछा भी, पर वह मुस्कुराकर सर झुका लेती और मेरे सामने से निकल जाती. पिछली बार जब मैं भोपाल गया था तो एक कार्यक्रम में वर्षा से मेरी भेंट हुई थी. बातचीत करते-करते उसने मुझसे मेरे छात्रावास का पता मांगा था. उसके बाद उसने मुझे लगातार चार पत्र लिखे परन्तु मैंने उसे किसी भी पत्र का प्रत्युत्तर नहीं दिया. - हिंदी उपन्यास ‘नर्मदा’ से, पृष्ठ संख्या: 1-2 हिंदी उपन्यास ‘नर्मदा’ से, पृष्ठ संख्या: 1-2”
