Edward Whymper (April 27, 1840 – September 16, 1911) was a renowned British mountaineer, explorer, and artist. He is best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, a landmark event in mountaineering history. Born in London, Whymper began his career as a wood engraver but soon turned to alpine exploration. He made numerous ascents in the Alps and authored several books, including 'Scrambles Amongst the Alps.' His achievements advanced mountaineering and high-altitude science.
