She is known for her contributions to feminist theory, gay rights, and science fiction literature. Gearhart taught at several universities, including San Francisco State University, and was active in the feminist and gay liberation movements during the 1970s and 1980s. Her works, such as 'The Feminist Politics of Sexuality' and the science fiction novel 'The Wanderground,' have had a profound impact on feminist and LGBTQ+ culture.
