Born in Springfield, Illinois, he studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago before turning to poetry. His works, such as 'The Congo' and 'General William Booth Enters into Heaven,' are characterized by strong rhythms and themes of American history, social justice, and religious symbolism. Lindsay's dramatic recitations influenced later spoken-word poetry and folk music. Despite his early fame, he struggled with financial difficulties and mental health issues, leading to his suicide in 1931. more
