Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (September 8, 1945 – March 8, 1973) was an American musician, best known as a founding member and keyboardist of the Grateful Dead. Born in San Bruno, California, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, deeply influenced by blues and folk music. Pigpen was renowned for his distinctive voice, organ playing, and stage presence, becoming a core figure in the band's early live performances.
