“Some secrets are best left buried, for they only bring pain and heartache when revealed.”

“Amidst the sea of joy-seeking juveniles,
Be the one anomaly that feasts on pain.
Seek out the pain among those around,
Rush down to heal like monsoon rain.”

“We should forgive God . . . For making us too short. Fat. Poor.
We should forgive God our baldness. Our cystic fibrosis. Our juvenile leukemia. We should forgive God’s indifference, His leaving us behind: Us, God’s forgotten Science Fair project, left to grow mold.
God’s goldfish, ignored until we’re forced to eat our own shit off the bottom".”

“It never changes, he says. The other group he brought here, it ended this same way.
People fall so in love with their pain, they can’t leave it behind. The same as the
stories they tell. We trap ourselves.”

“In some cultures, pain is a hardship to be overcome. In others, pain is a natural part of life, something that everyone experiences and that doesn’t need to be feared and defeated. Understanding how different cultures perceive pain helps us better treat our patients.”

“It has become such an automatic reaction to pain, for him to mask it with a grin. Oak, laughing all the time. Pretending nothing hurts. A false face hiding a false heart.”

“We've failed in our ultimate sacrament. Our shame is for ourselves. Our disgust is for each other.
The survivors who still wear church costume do it to brag about their pain. Sackcloth and ashes.
They couldn't save themselves. They were weak. The rules are all gone, and it doesn't matter.
We're all going overnight express delivery straight to Hell".”

“Thoughts of despair crumble my mind.
Slowly giving up.
Slowly giving in.
I am tired, tired of fighting so hard.
Tired of regretting the mistakes I have made and unable to climb out.
Afraid of what others would think, I keep the agony, regret and hatred inside. The hatred of myself.
Dear God please give me yet again another chance, a chance to climb out of this hole.”
“For the first time in my life, I had begun to feel that kind of slow desolation that rises, little by little, slowly, slowly every day, that one hardly knows it is there. Until that one day when all those small deaths accrue into a kind of leaden weight one feels in the legs and the arms. One cannot move from all that pain that manifests itself as an all-encompassing lack of feeling. That is how strong the pain really is. It cannot admit its own hurt to itself. For once, I would have gladly died in that bed smelling of shit, my hair shaved, my heart no longer a muscle but a kind of extraneous organ not part of myself but beating in spite of myself. It was then that I knew that spite was not a thing to take against a captor, but that spite was a thing to hold against one's self. For I did not want to be alive. Life, and my daily affirmation of it, was not something I wanted, as time went by.”
