“Culcat pe burtă și cu casca trasă cât mai pe ceafă, Axente simțea cum fiecare explozie părea a fi tot mai aproape și că nu mai avea timp să-și recapete răsuflarea. Pământul se zguduia tot mai rău și ploaia părea că se transformase din picături de apă în bolovani, pietre și uneori valuri de pământ. Doamne Dumnezeule, se ruga Axente printre exploziile obuzelor ce cădeau, lasă-mă să-mi mai văd copiii măcar înc-odată! Dintr-odată suflul exploziei unui obuz ce căzu în apropiere, aproape că-l îngropă de viu sub un val de pământ. Pe locul unde o clipă mai devreme erau întinși la pământ soldații Ion Avram și Petruț Iacob, acum se afla un crater cu marginile înegrite, din care încă mai ieșea un firicel de fum. Cu ochii împăienjeniți de pământul ce aproape că-l acoperise și cu urechile înfundate, Axente se târâ pînă la marginea craterului și instinctiv se aruncă înăuntru știind că nu cad două proiectile în același loc.”
