Nobody Quotes

“The Cyclops was about to roll the stone back into place, when from somewhere outside Annabeth shouted, "Hello, ugly!" Polyphemus stiffened. "Who said that?" "Nobody!" Annabeth yelled. That got exactl;y the reaction she'd been hoping for. The monster's face turned red with rage. "Nobody!" Polyphemus yelled back. "I remember you!" "You're too stupid to remember anybody," Annabeth taunted. "Much less Nobody." I hoped to the gods she was already moving when she said that, because Polyphemus bellowed furiously, grabbed the nearest boulder (which happened to be his front door) and threw it toward the sound of Annabeth's voice. I heard the rock smash into a thousand fragments. To a terrible moment, there was silence. Then Annabeth shouted, "You haven't learned to throw any better, either!" Polyphemus howled. "Come here! Let me kill you, Nobody!" "You can't kill Nobody, you stupid oaf," she taunted. "Come find me!" Polyphemus barreled down the hill toward her voice. Now, the "Nobody" thing would have confused anybody, but Annabeth had explained to me that it was the name Odysseus had used to trick Polyphemus centuries ago, right before he poked the Cyclops's eye out with a large hot stick. Annabeth had figured Polyphemus would still have a grudge about that name, and she was right. In his frenzy to find his old enemy, he forgot about resealing the cave entrance. Apparently, he did even stop to consider that Annabeth's voice was female, whereas the first Nobody had been male. On the other hand, he'd wanted to marry Grover, so he couldn't have been all that bright about the whole male/female thing. I just hoped Annabeth could stay alive and keep distracting him long enough for me to find Grover and Clarisse.”

“The worst mistake everyone makes is to analyze their self-image through the reflections the world mirrors because the world will never ever mirror something that is equal or better than what you show but always inferior. People don't feel comfortable near individuals that make them feel bad unless they want something or admire them, which is often not the case because of envy and resentment. Consequently nobody will ever show you your best qualities. They will hide them from you by never telling them to you. Instead, they will reflect back at you your mistakes and insecurities. When you don't want to fight, people insult you, when you are being polite, people disrespect you, and when you ask questions, people take the opportunity to make you feel stupid. Nobody will ever show you the real you. As a matter of fact it is more comfortable for them to believe who you are is all you can be.”

“God has a way of picking a “nobody” and turning their world upside down, in order to create a “somebody” that will remove the obstacles they encountered out of the pathway for others.”

“Don’t be one of the dreary souls. Don’t be one of the lukewarm. Don’t be neutral. Don’t be non-committal. Plunge in, all the way. Don’t live like the Ignavi, without blame or without praise. Do something. Make a mark. Don’t join the cowardly choir. Don’t let heaven and hell alike shut their door in your face because you are fit for neither. How pathetic must you be if even the depths of hell disdain to receive you?”

“A man of fear can only hate. Love is a state of harmony; hate is a state of illness. Hate is illness, and love is health and wholeness. When you hate, your ego is fulfilled. The ego can exist only if you hate. In love, the ego has to disappear.  In love, you are no longer separate.  Love helps you to be in harmony with others. If you are too identified with the ego, then hate becomes easy, and love becomes difficult. Love needs courage, because it needs the sacrifice of the ego. Only those who are ready to become nobody, to become a silence, a nothingness, are able to receive the gift of love.”
