E. F. L. Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, was a distinguished British statesman and the Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931. Known for his diplomatic prowess and efforts to promote Indian self-government, he was born on April 16, 1881, and died on December 23, 1959.
