He gained international recognition through collaborations with director Peter Weir on films such as Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. In 2004, Boyd won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Master and Commander, becoming the first Australian to achieve this honor.
