Salmon P. Chase was a distinguished American statesman and lawyer who served as the 6th Chief Justice of the United States and as the 15th Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. A leading figure in the Civil War, he was instrumental in the establishment of the National Banking System. He was a U.S. Senator from Ohio and a prominent advocate for the Union cause.
