Emanuel Celler was a prominent American politician known for his contributions to immigration and civil rights. Born on May 6, 1888, in Vilnius, Lithuania, he immigrated to the United States in 1903. Celler served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1923 to 1957, representing New York's 12th congressional district. He is best remembered for his advocacy of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. He passed away on January 15, 1981. more
