Tom's Midnight Garden

When Tom is sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in a flat without a garden, he feels lonely and bored. But one night, he hears the old grandfather clock in the hall strike thirteen. Curious, he goes to investigate and finds that the back door now opens onto a beautiful, sunlit Victorian garden. There he meets a girl named Hatty, and they play together in the garden each night. As Tom continues his visits, he realizes that time in the garden moves differently, and he is witnessing Hatty's childhood across many years. The story explores themes of friendship, time, and memory, as Tom comes to understand the true nature of his magical experiences and the deep connection he shares with Hatty. more

“In the Shadow of Slavery covers two and a half centuries of black life in New York City, and skillfully interweaves the categories of race and class as they affected the formation of African American identity. Leslie Harris has made a major contribution to our understanding of the black experience.”
