Her groundbreaking play "Miss Lulu Bett" earned her the Pulitzer Prize in 1921, marking a significant milestone for women in American theater. Beyond drama, Gale authored numerous novels and short story collections, often exploring themes of women's experiences and social reform. Active in progressive movements, she was a strong advocate for women's suffrage.
