Barbara Jordan was a prominent American politician known for her influential career as a lawyer and a member of the United States House of Representatives. Born on February 21, 1936, she served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and later as a U.S. Representative from Texas. Jordan was the first African American woman to serve in the Texas Senate and the first African American woman elected to Congress from the South.
