Enoch Fitch Burr was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat who served as the United States Minister to France from 1856 to 1859 and as the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1865. Born on October 21, 1818, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Burr attended Harvard College and began his career as a lawyer. He entered politics in 1849 and held various positions, including a term as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. His tenure as Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War was pivotal for the Union's naval efforts. more
