Quote by Kate Molleson

“The distinction between "classical" and "folk" music only really emerged in the late eighteenth and into the nineteenth centuries. The words only make sense (to the extent they do) when they're set in opposition to each other. The musicologist Matthew Gelbart has written a terrific book on the subject called The Invention of Folk Music and Art Music, in which he details how it used to be that musicians just played music: what mattered was the place and purpose, not so much who wrote the tune or played it or how they spoke. The same musicians would cover courts, pop songs and worship. These musicians travelled and shape-shifted. If dancing was required, they would play dance standards. If the mood was contemplative, they would unravel something slow and soulful.”

“Eski Yunan estetiği şiirde musiki arar: ''Musa'lar yani herbiri bir güzel sanatın tanrıçası olan altın sesli Yunan ilaheleri; şairler, lisanı sözden çok ses haline koyabilsinler ve bunu anne tabiattan yükselen sesler halinde duyabilsinler diye; kendi güzel seslerini Yunanistan'ın akar sularına bırakmışlardı'' efsanesine inanır. O gün bugün, dünyanın neresinde ''büyük şair'' yetişmişse mutlaka şiire musiki katmıştır. Bu anlayışa göre ''şiir, kelimelerle yapılan musikidir.”

“The essence of physical education in Naperville 203 is teaching fitness instead of sports. The underlying philosophy is that if physical education class can be used to instruct kids how to monitor and maintain their own health and fitness, then the lessons they learn will serve them for life. And probably a longer and happier life at that. What's being taught, really is a lifestyle. The students are developing healthy habits, skills, and a sense of fun, along with a knowledge of how their bodies work. Naperville's gym teachers are opening up new vistas for their students by exposing them to such a wide range of activities that they can't help but find something they enjoy. They're getting kids hooked on moving instead of sitting in front of the television.”

“PE! This word was comprised of two single letters, which would normally not cause anyone any trouble. They were two single letters that were usually associated with the further words of “health” and “extended life” and therefore, had a positive reputation. However, for me, the P and the E put together was the worst possible combination. Every time they were mentioned, I would sigh in displeasure, my heart rate would increase and I would feel lightheaded. After all, in my mind, PE = exercise and exercise = torture!”
