Vachel Lindsay (November 10, 1879 – December 5, 1931) was an American poet, writer, and performer, best known for his rhythmic, performance-oriented poetry and his contributions to American folk culture. Born in Springfield, Illinois, he studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago before turning to poetry. His works, such as 'The Congo' and 'General William Booth Enters into Heaven,' are characterized by strong rhythms and themes of American history, social justice, and religious symbolism. Lindsay's dramatic recitations influenced later spoken-word poetry and folk music. Despite his early fame, he struggled with financial difficulties and mental health issues, leading to his suicide in 1931. more
