“A compaixão que surge da afabilidade arcaica não se deixa compreender a partir da “compaixão” comum. Ela se aplica, em primeiro lugar, não apenas a outros seres humanos, mas ao ente em geral. Em segundo lugar, ela não se deve à identificação ou a se “pôr no lugar do outro” [Einfühlung]. A compaixão da afabilidade não conhece aquele Eu que se compadece ou se alegra com o outro por meio de um processo de identificação. Se todo “sentimento” [Gefühl] estivesse ligado ao “sujeito”, então, a compaixão [Mitgefühl] não seria um “sentimento”. A compaixão não é um sentimento “subjetivo”, não é uma “inclinação”. Ela não é meu sentimento. Ninguém sente. A compaixão acontece com alguém. Ela é afável: “Ele [o zen-budista] se alegra e sofre como se não fosse de modo algum “ele” que se alegra e sofre. Ele se sente como na respiração: não é “ele” que respira, como se a respiração dependesse dele e do seu consentimento, mas sim ele é respirado e tem, aí, no máximo, a observação consciente”. O Com afável se deve ao vazio que é esvaziado dessa distinção entre Eu e outro. Ele não permite aquele Si que se sentiria na compaixão: “Compaixão [...] não pode promover o menor sentimento de satisfação consigo mesmo”. Aquele Com afável está enraizado em uma in-diferença [In-Differenz] ou equi-valência [Gleich-Gültigkeit]. Ele é livre tanto do ódio quanto do amor, tanto do afeto como da repulsa.”
