“My background is in painting but in school in the sixties, like many artists of that time, I believed that painting was dead. I began to work in collaboration with other artists in the creation of performances and installation works. Soon after, I started making video and photographic works and in the process became fascinated with the media itself. Before long I was setting things up just for the camera. In l970 I got a dog and he turned out to be very interested in video and photography as well.” WellsLongSchoolArtistProcessMediaDogCreationPaintingPhotographyPerformancesCamerasBackgroundsSettingVideoSettingsCollaborationFascinatedSixtyInstallation Author:William Wegman
“I think every once in a while I feel the need to break my medium... if I have been doing a very large painting I like to drop into something in small scale. It is a challenge to go into this size. It is just to hold my own interest, and then each media has its own conditions.” IfsThinkingNeedsFeelsHas BeensInterestChallengesMy OwnBreakConditionsMediaPaintingSizeScalesMediums Author:Lee Krasner
“The media ... is like an oil painting. Close up, it looks like nothing on Earth. Stand back and you get the drift.” LooksEarthMediaPaintingOilOil Painting Book:Kill the messenger Source: Kill the messenger
“I had just been doing graffiti around New York and this real estate investor guy had walked through meat packing in New York and saw some of my graffiti. He was impressed and asked if I sold canvases. I really had not made any canvases of my graffiti work yet, but told him I could make one for him. He then commissioned me to make ten paintings and put on my first art show. Between the sold out show and the cops chasing after me it created a lot of media and I've been doing really well since then.” IfsFirstsWellsArtMadeRealShowsGuySawsMediaNew YorkPaintingTenMeatInvestorsCopImpressedEstatesChasingGraffitiPackingSold Out Author:Alec Monopoly
“I have, and do sometimes, work with other media. But there is something about the physical activity and the directness of painting that I find fascinating. I am very attracted to the materiality of paintings and the visual phenomena of hue and value.” SometimesValuesMediaPaintingActivityVisualsFascinatingHuePhysical ActivityMateriality Author:Stephen Beal
“Over the past two decades, the boundary between photography and other media like painting, sculpture, or performance has become increasingly porous. It would seem that each medium has absorbed the other, leaving the photographic residing everywhere, but nowhere in particular.” TwoSeemsPastMediaParticularPaintingPhotographyPerformancesLeavingDecadesBoundariesMediumsSculptureOver The Past Book:Each Wild Idea: Writing, Photography, History Source: Each Wild Idea: Writing, Photography, History
