Sarah Helen Whitman (January 19, 1803 – June 27, 1878) was an American poet, transcendentalist, and spiritualist. She is best known for her brief engagement to Edgar Allan Poe, but she was also a talented writer in her own right, whose poetry often explored themes of love, death, and the supernatural. Active in Providence, Rhode Island's literary circles, she published two collections of poetry. While her work received some recognition during her lifetime, she was largely remembered for her association with Poe.
