When she graduates from junior high, I’ll keep her at home and treat her like a maid. By this time of the morning, she’ll be up cooking our breakfast. I’ll be lying in bed like this, taking it easy with you.” “That sounds nice.” “So it appeals to you. In that case, I’ll make her cook breakfast when she’s in grammar school.” “Will a first-grader be able to cook?” “She won’t have any choice. Pare că se manifestă mereu o împotrivire instinctivă la rostirea cuvintelor limpezi, fie ele „sînt atît de fericit" sau „e atîta tristeţe". Rareori este acceptată prezentarea în totalitate a unei privelişti sau a unei experienţe.”

“Ceea ce încercau, în schimb, să facă poeţii şi pictorii japonezi se poate ilustra excelent printr-o anecdotă celebră. Se spune că într-o zi un mare general, îmbrăcat într-o armură strălucitoare, aştepta o vizita. Fu informat că urma să vină cineva care nu trebuia să-i vadă îmbrăcat în armură, aşa că îşi trase pe el în grabă o mantie uşoară de mătase albă. Efectul dat de sclipirea armurii lustruite prin mătasea subţire este cel spre care năzuiau poeţii. Scriitorii japonezi n-au dorit niciodată să descrie întreaga măreţie a generalului cu armură, nici toată frumuseţea unei zile de primăvară. Ei au preferat să vorbească despre sclipirile metalului, sau despre înflorirea unei singure flori, făcîndu-ne astfel pe noi să ne imaginăm restul întregului din care s-au distilat aceste citeva picături.”

“Încercarea de a reprezenta entităţi mai largi prin mici detalii a condus la un realism şi o concreteţe a imaginii care contrastează în mod straniu cu ambiguitatea nebuloasă a efectului general. Zgomotul apei în care sare o broască, ţîrîitul ascuţit al greierilor, parfumul unei flori necunoscute pot fi imaginea centrală în jurul căreia se construieşte un poem japonez. Aici putem detecta influenţa doctrinei budiste Zen, susținea, între altele, că iluminarea poate veni din orice percepție. Săritura broaştei ce tulbură liniştea profundă a unui iaz putea fi şi ea un med de a obţine iluminarea, asemeni unei autentice întruchipări a vieţii.”
