“চেতনা দিয়ে যে জীবনের অনুভব, তার অবর্তমানে কোনো ধরণের অস্তিত্বের অর্থ নেই। মৃত্যু হল স্বপ্নহীন ঘুম। আমাদের সচেতন জীবন সবসময়ই ধ্বংস হতে থাকে যখন আমাদের ঘুমে স্বপ্ন থাকে না। জন্মের পূর্বে যেমন চেতনা থাকে না, ঘুমের মাঝেও আমরা সেই অবস্থায় বিরাজ করি। স্বপ্ন-ছাড়া ঘুমের মাঝে নিউরনদের মধ্যে সংকেতের আদান-প্রদানের কম্পাঙ্ক খুব কম হয়ে যায়। সেকেন্ডে এক থেকে তিনবার, অথচ যখন আমরা স্বপ্ন দেখি তখন সেই নিউরনগুলি উঁচু কম্পাঙ্কে যদৃচ্ছভাবে কাজ করে। আবার যখন জেগে থাকি তখনও সেভাবে কাজ করে। তাই স্বপ্ন ও জাগরণের মধ্যে কোনো পার্থক্য নেই। আর স্বপ্নবিহীন ঘুম ও মৃত্যুর মধ্যে কোনো পার্থক্য নেই, প্রতি রাতে ঘুমের সময় আমরা বহুবার মৃত্যুবরণ করি।”
