“It was hard to think how long he would go on sitting outside listening to the ocean he had never seen, with his wife locked upstairs with the blinds down, hating the country about which neither of them had ever really learned anything, and how all the good their fidelity to one another had done was to keep both of them from doing what they wanted to.
