“Egy nagy kérdés, hogy lehet-e lírát, azaz lírai költészetet úgy fordítani, hogy a szépsége megmaradjon. Véleményem szerint nem lehet, vagy csak kivételes szerencsével, hiszen egy másik nyelv anyagából kifaragni ugyanazt a szobrot nem lehet, mert az anyag beleszól a szobrász munkájába - s ez így is van rendjén. Akkor vajon része lehet-e a líra a világirodalomnak? Igen. A versfordítás fontos tevékenység, akár kis, akár nagy nyelvre történik, de elsősorban az a feladata, hogy elmondja: miről szól a vers, mik a költő versbe foglalt érzései, gondolatai, témái. Egy jó vers esetében ez óhatatlanul egy bizonyos szépséget fog kölcsönözni a fordításnak, hiszen a mondadndó előadásának ritmusa, a képek és hasonlatok sorrendje, kibontása, a szöveg lélegzése nagyon is átadható egy tartalomhű fordításban (sőt, annak éppen ez a feladata).”
