Like a plagued rat, mouth filled with crimson froth now asleep in the nook of darkness; And will not ever awake anymore. ‘Never again will wake up, never again will bear the endless—endless burden of painful waking—’ It was told to him when the moon sank down—in the strange darkness by a silence like the neck of a camel that might have shown up at his window side. Nevertheless, the owl stays wide awake; The rotten still frog begs two more moments in the hope for another dawn in conceivable warmth. “কলকাতা-কেন্দ্রিক ন্যাকাচিত্তির সাহিত্যের এঁদো কপচাবাজি এবং তার ভেক্টর প্রতিষ্ঠানের মুখে জোর থাপ্পড় মেরে তার গিল্টি-করা দাঁত উখড়ে তার ভেতরকার মালকড়ি ফাঁস করে দিতে আজ থেকে তিপ্পান্ন বছর আগে দানা বেঁধেছিল বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম আভাঁগার্দ আন্দোলন ----- হাংরি জেনারেশন। যা ছিল আক্ষরিক অর্থেই কলকাতার বাইরের কবি-লেখকদের নয়াল সংযোজন। তাঁরা এসেছিলেন এমন এক মিলিউ থেকে যেখানে বাংলার তথাকথিত ভদ্রায়তনিক সংস্কৃতির কোনও শিস-ই গজাবার নয়। জীবনের অনেকরকম শিক্ষা থেকে বঞ্চিত থাকতে হয় যেখানে। হাংরি সিসৃক্ষার কলিন অধ্যয়নে এই প্রেক্ষাপটটি সর্বাগ্রে মাথায় রাখতে হবে। এই হাঙ্গামার প্রধান স্রষ্টা মলয় রায়চৌধুরীর শৈশব অতিবাহিত হয়েছিল বিহারের ভয়ঙ্কর কুচেল অধ্যুষিত বাখরগঞ্জ বস্তিতে। তাঁর টায়ার ছোটবেলা অতিক্রান্ত মুসলিম অধ্যাসিত দরিয়াপুর মহল্লায়। সেই অস্বাচ্ছন্দ্য, অখল জ্বালা, ক্ষোভ আর বিদ্রোহকে বুকে করে মলয়ের বেড়ে ওঠা। সংস্কৃতির একেবারে নিচেকার পাদানি থেকে আসা, নিম্নবিত্ত থেকে মধ্যবিত্তে ওঠার প্রতিটি মানুষী শঠতার সাক্ষী, স্পেঙলারের সংস্কৃতি ও অবক্ষয়কালীন সর্বগ্রাস তত্ত্বে তা-খাওয়া একজন বাইশ-তেইশ বছরের কৃষ্টিদোগলা বা কালচারাল বাস্টার্ড লেখালেখির মাঠে এলে যা ঘটবে, সেটা তো রফা হয়েই ছিল। ১৯৫৯-৬০। বৃটিশবীর্যিত মুলুকের পোঁদে গাঁড়সা পুঁতে গাদি সামলাচ্ছেন নেহেরু। দেশের দুই প্রান্তে পার্টিশানের টসটসে পাঁচড়া। পুব পাকিস্তান থেকে আগত অন্যৎপুষ্ট মানুষের কিছু থোপনা তখনও আনলোড হচ্ছে শেয়ালদার টেসেলেটেড চাতালে। হাভাতে মানুষের কেরবালা বিধানবাবুর গড় জুড়ে ছিৎরে পড়ছে। দেশভাগের সময় পুব বাঙলা থেকে যে কিশোরগুলো বাবা-মায়ের কড়ে ধরে কলকাতায় এসেছিল, তারা এদণ্ডে গাগতরে বেতর, কিন্তু বয়সে ও মগজে সাজোয়ান। দেশভাগের খসা চোকলা। কাঁধের চিক্কুটে ঝোলায় কবিতার লাজুক খাতা আর কলা-ওঠা টিনের সুটকেশ ঢুয়ে কলকাতার রাস্তায় গলিঘুঁজিতে এক রাত্তির হিল্লের মনসুবায় চোখমুখ কালিয়ে ঘুরে বেড়ায় আর সাঁঝের আলা মদ্দিম হলে সারমেয় অধ্যাসিত ফুটপাতে, হয়ত-বা কোনও দয়াল বন্ধুর ঘাড়ে অথবা গেরস্ত বাড়ির হেঁসেল-ঠোরে রাত গুজরান। ইহাদের প্রত্যেকের বুকে কবিতা নামের পিলপিলে গণ্ডুপদটি ক্ষণে ক্ষণে ঢসন মারে। ইহারা সকলে প্রবল কবিতা-পিশাচ। পিশাচ, কেননা ইহাদের মাঘার ঘিলুতে জবরদস্ত পুঁজরক্ত যাহা গোপন আঁধারে কলম দিয়া চোয়ায় আর দেউলের দেউটি সহসা নিভায়। ষাটোত্তর গরদিশের দিনগুলি। গেরস্তের জবরদখল-করা হেঁসেলে আচকা নোটিশ হয়ে গেল। ভাঙা আয়না, দাঁড় টুনানো চিরুনি, তেলের শিশি, জীর্ণ ফতুয়া, কলা-ওঠা টিনের সুটকেশ আর লজ্জাবতী কবিতার ধুকড়ি নিয়ে পথে দাঁড়াল সুভাষ। সুভাষ শলা করল, ----- শৈল, চ, দুজনে মিলে একটা ঘর নিই। টালায় ১৬-বি শ্যামচরণ মুখার্জি স্ট্রিটের একতলায় দুর্গন্ধ-পীড়িত ফালি-খানেক ঘর যোগাড়ও হয়ে গেল। খিড়কির পাল্লা সরালেই ড্রেনের ধারে পাছা ঝুলিয়ে নিত্যকর্মে ব্যস্ত কৃশগাঁড় বিভীষিকা। সুভাষের গেরামের ইশকুলে কমপয়সার চাকরি। দু-বেলা যুৎসই অন্ন জোটে না বটে, কিন্তু গদ্যের হাতটি খাসা। তাহাতে ড্যাশ ও হাইফেনের যাচাই ভুরিভোজ। শৈলেশ্বরেরও মতিগতি উনিশবিশ। অল্প পড়াশোনা। ভাঙাচোরা ফ্যামিলির ছেলে। অশহুরে, তথা জন্মলব্ধ সারল্য ও সততা। ফলে মানিকজোড় হতে সূর্যঘড়ি লাগেনি। দুজনেই টিউশানি ধরে, আর ছাড়ে। হপ্তায় দু-দেড় দিন ভিজিট, আর চার-পাঁচদিন একুনে নাগা। ফলে আট থেকে দশদিনের মাথায় জবাব হয়ে যায়। খাওয়ার পয়সা নেই। বৃদ্ধ পিতা পঙ্গুত্বের লেংগি খেয়ে খাটের প্রাণী। ছাত্র-রাজনীতির গাজোয়ারি-প্রসূত 'লম্বা' হাঁকন বাবদ আত্মীয়-স্বজনদের সঙ্গে নীমসম্বন্ধ। ফলে, দিনগুলি বেজায় নড়বড়ে, জীবনযাত্রা ধূরিপথহীন। সাহিত্য করা তো দূর অস্ত, সাহিত্যের জিগির-মাত্রে পিছদাঁড়ায় কাঁপন। ডাইনির ছমছমে খিখি অষ্টপ্রহর। ক্কচিৎ পকেটে বাড়তি খুচরো জুটলে শ্যালদার চোরা-হোটেলে জলের সঙ্গে পাঞ্চ করে, ভরদুপুরে কান্ট্রি-লিকার। শ্যামবাজারের জন্তা হোটেলে ছ'আনায় ভরপেট খানা। লেটনাইটে ঘুমের ধাক্কায়, বাড়ি। একজনের ঘুম জুটত, অন্যজনের জুটত না। শৈলেশ্বরের ছিল ইনসোমনিয়ার ব্যামো। সারা-সারারাত মরা মাছের নিস্পন্দ চাউনি সিলিং-পানে। সুভাষরা একসময় ক'জন বন্ধু মিলে 'এষণা' নামে একটা কাগজ বের করত। খুবই পাতি, অতীব বালখিল্য সে কাগজ। সুভাষ-বাদে অন্যরা সবাই মামুলি মাস্টারবেট-করা লেখক, মানে পার্ট-টাইম। অল্প খিঁচে নিল, ব্যস, সাহিত্যের বাঘ মারা হয়ে গেল। আপিসে-আপিসে কেরানিগিরি, আর রোববার সকালে পাঁচ পয়সায় আধ প্যাকেট ক্যাপস্টান কিনে শ্যামবাজার কফিহাউসে ধুন্ধুমার আড্ডা। কফির কাপ আর তামাকের কড়া ধোঁয়ায় বাঙালির বেড়ে বাফুনারি। শৈলেশ্বর-সুভাষরা ইন্টেলেকচুয়াল নয়, গেঁয়ো বুদ্ধি, গেঁয়ো কথাবার্তা। অপরপ্রান্তে, ধাউড়দের মুখে বিদিশি বই, ফরেন-কলমচিদের রেফারেন্স। ইনজিরির ছররা। দুজনের মধ্যে শৈলেশ্বরের বুদ্ধি একটু খোলা, মওকা বুঝে, সময় থাকতে কাগজটাকে নিজের হেফাজতে নিল।”
