“Ce que je voudrais, disait Lucien, c’est raconter l’histoire, non point d’un person-nage, mais d’un endroit – tiens, par exemple, d’une allée de jardin, comme celle-ci, raconter ce qui s’y passe – depuis le matin jusqu’au soir. Il y viendrait d’abord des bonnes d’enfants, des nourrices, avec des rubans… Non, non… d’abord des gens tout gris, sans sexe ni âge, pour balayer l’allée, arroser l’herbe, changer les fleurs enfin la scène et le décor avant l’ouverture des grilles tu comprends ? Alors l’entrée des nourrices. Des mioches font des pâtés de sable, se chamaillent ; les bonnes les giflent. Ensuite il y a la sortie des petites classes – et puis les ouvrières. Il y a des pauvres qui viennent manger sur un banc. Plus tard des jeunes gens qui se cher-chent ; d’autres qui se fuient ; d’autres qui s’isolent, des rêveurs. Et puis la foule, au moment de la musique et de la sortie des magasins. Des étudiants, comme à présent. Le soir, des amants qui s’embrassent ; d’autres qui se quittent en pleurant. Enfin, à la tombée du jour, un vieux couple… Et, tout à coup, un roulement de tambour ; on ferme. Tout le monde sort. La pièce est finie. Tu comprends : quelque chose qui donnerait l’impression de la fin de tout, de la mort… mais sans parler de la mort, naturellement.”
